Leaving a gift to Sight Concern Worcestershire

It’s never too early to begin thinking about the world and causes we leave behind.

Leaving a gift to Sight Concern Worcestershire of whatever size in your Will is your opportunity to leave a lasting legacy to help support those individuals living with a visual impairment in Worcestershire. Let your last mark on this world be something wonderful and help those living with a visual impairment live the life they choose!

Through the kindness of those who made the decision to leave a lasting legacy to Sight Concern Worcestershire, we are able to support people in breaking down boundaries.

Legacies are essential in ensuring we are able to continue to run our much-loved and much needed sight loss services across the county. Our services are created to break boundaries and allow our clients to live the life they choose. We offer a broad range of services which promote independent living, social engagement and plenty of laughter. Without the support of individuals who have remembered us in their Wills, this work would not be possible.

We measure our success by the impact we make on the lives of the visually impaired. Below are some examples of the services we offer and the difference those services have made to our clients.

How legacies help us

Befriending

One of our core and most valued services is provided by our SocialEyes Volunteer Befrienders who provide bespoke support to individuals living with sight loss. Befrienders are a real lifeline to our clients. Some Befrienders visit individuals in their own home to provide companionship or help with everyday tasks such as reading their post or helping with shopping. Others enable people to get out and about with confidence again or maybe engage in a favorite hobby. We’ve even had requests for everything from tandem cycling and knitting to theatre trips. Our Befrienders rise to every challenge!

We also have some volunteer Befrienders who provide support for people over the phone with regular friendly chats to help reduce loneliness and isolation.

Could your legacy be to help support those living with a visual impairment live the life they choose, free of unnecessary limitations and loneliness.

Technology Support

Technology is potentially life changing for those living with sight loss and here, at Sight Concern, we have a designated Support Officer who meets with clients, listens to their needs and then makes bespoke recommendations as to pieces of technology which could not only support, but enhance their lives.

Once that recommendation has been thoroughly explored with a client, we are able to source, install and train clients on how to successfully introduce that technology into their daily lives.

I recently set up an Amazon Echo device which runs the Alexa voice recognition service for a woman who had just come out of hospital and was struggling to walk. She wanted to listen to the radio but was unable to get up to turn it on. With Alexa she can now talk to it from across the room and turn Radio 4 on. But, even better, she can use Alexa for listening to the weather forecast, her favorite book or music, the news (including her local talking news) and a myriad of other useful services.

Will Aid

Every November Solicitors across the UK volunteer their expertise to write Wills. They offer both in person appointment and remote appoints to take your Will instructions. During this week solicitors will write a basic Will and waive their usual fee, in return for you making a donation to a chosen charity.

The suggested minimum donation is £100 which is significantly cheaper than the usual cost of a Will. It’s a great way to get peace of mind and also leave a positive lasting mark on the world. We also have some volunteer Befrienders who provide support for people over the phone with regular friendly chats to help reduce loneliness and isolation.

Wills FAQ

The task of creating a Will often feel very daunting, but by using this guide, we hope to help you navigate the process with ease. If you still have questions after reading this guide, then do please call us on [                    ] and a member of the team would be very happy to support you further.

The first step and most important step is to find a solicitor to help you write your Will. To find a solicitor to assist you, you may wish to visit the Law Society’s website, Find a Solicitor and complete a local search. INSERT LINK HERE

You could also visit Solicitors For The Elderly INSERT LINK and find an accredited solicitor who has experience working with individuals on later life issues.

An Executor of your Will is someone you choose to make sure your wishes are carried out. It is often sensible to have more than one executor and usually they are either a legal professional, family member or friend. It is sensible to choose someone who is good with paperwork and trustworthy. You should also ask them whether they are happy to do this.

There are three types of gifts you can leave in a Will. Your solicitor will explain them in greater detail, but below is a brief summary to help you get started.

Yes, charitable gifts are exempt from Inheritance Tax (currently 40%). Furthermore, if your estate is subject to Inheritance Tax, then leaving 10% your residuary estate to charity may result in the remainder of your estate being taxed at a discounted rate of 36%. Your Solicitor can explain this to you in greater detail.
