New Hallucinations after Sight Loss Group in association with Esme’s Umbrella

Up to 50% of people with significant sight loss experience vivid, silent, visual hallucinations. They are caused by a condition called Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS). Not everyone with sight loss develops CBS but, for those who do, the condition can be very distressing, particularly because the hallucinations may be mistaken for being part of a mental health condition.

CBS is not related to any mental health conditions; it is caused entirely by sight loss. The hallucinations can take many forms including patterns and detailed images of people, places and events.  Most people who develop CBS have no previous knowledge of the condition and many are scared to confide in anyone.

We are working with national CBS charity Esme’s Umbrella to set up a support group for people with CBS. Please let us know if you have this condition and would be in interested in hearing more about our plans.
